A sweet surprise proposal and engagement session in Canyon Lake, Texas


Note to self: always pack sunscreen and bring your water bottle when photographing a surprise proposal in the middle of summer!

To be fair, I had my electrolytes in my car, I just didn't bring my giant cup with me. I had a lot of other things to carry, ya know?

Anyways, Lucas reached out to me a couple of months prior to when he was planning on proposing to his longtime girlfriend, Katelynn. I love planning surprises and I just love love (hello, that's why I got into this business!), so I was so excited when his inquiry rolled in! Lucas & Katelynn were planning a hill country couples' trip with some friends on Memorial Day Weekend and he decided it would be the perfect place to pop the question.

Lucas picked a beautiful spot on Madrone Trail in Canyon Lake that overlooked the water on this perfect early summer afternoon. We brought baskets and baskets of gorgeous flowers up the trail to get to the lookout spot and set up the most adorable colorful landing space for Lucas to get down on one knee, complete with champagne. Once all of that was in place and the bride was on the move, I made my way towards a shaded bushy area to wait for the magic to unfold!

I can't even lie to y'all...I was tearing up behind the camera watching it all happen. Katelynn was so surprised and taken off guard, and the love and comfort that they have with each other was so tangible during the proposal! Once the big question was popped, I emerged from my hiding spot to get some closer shots and to introduce myself to the new bride-to-be - which is always such a funny moment. "Hi, you don't know me, but I'm a stranger who just took your pictures and has been in cahoots with your now-fiance for the past couple of months to surprise you. Congratulations! Nice to meet you!" Hilarious.

Now the real fun could begin! Katelynn's bestie, Ashley, came out of the woodwork to congratulate the two on their new engagement - and to get Katelynn ready for her surprise engagement mini-session with me! Lucas and Ashley thought of EVERYTHING: there were multiple dress and shoe options, disposable cameras for posterity, and a couple of press-on nail options so that Katelynn's hand would be photo-perfect to show off her new bling! Ladies, do not settle for anything less than this.

I mean, how cute are they?! We had a sweet little mini engagement session where they re-created the proposal moment and just got to bask in the joy of being newly engaged to each other. Lucas & Katelynn are the absolute sweetest and it was such a joy for me to capture this special moment in their lives!
